Amazon Makes a Last-Minute Bid to Buy TikTok

Updated: Jun 16

At one point, it seemed like America’s battle to save TikTok was over—think again. Just as the clock ticks down on TikTok’s deadline to find a non-Chinese buyer, Amazon has thrown its hat into the ring. The retail giant has placed a bid to acquire the viral video platform, a move that could reshape the future of social media in the U.S., according to The New York Times. But with just days to go, and the looming threat of a U.S. ban, the clock is ticking for TikTok.

Washington vs. ByteDance

As of today, the situation surrounding TikTok has grown even more intense. The app, which boasts nearly half of all Americans as users, is now under the microscope of Washington lawmakers. The crux of the matter? TikTok’s ownership by ByteDance, a Chinese company. U.S. officials argue that Beijing could potentially use the app to conduct influence operations or gather sensitive data on American users—sparking a wave of national security concerns.

In response to these growing fears, Congress passed a bipartisan law in 2024 requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok by January 19, 2025. This deadline looms large, and President Donald Trump is reportedly expected to discuss the future of the app at an Oval Office meeting on Wednesday. The U.S. government has made it clear that if TikTok fails to find a new owner, the app could be banned in the U.S.

Amazon’s Bold Yet Not Surprising Move

Enters Amazon. The e-commerce giant, known for its vast reach in online shopping and cloud services, has made a surprise last-minute bid to take over TikTok. The New York Times reported that Amazon’s bid, made through an offer letter addressed to key U.S. officials, was submitted just days before the deadline. While the details of the offer remain unclear, the move shows that Amazon is serious about expanding its foothold in the social media space.

This isn’t Amazon’s first flirtation with social media. The company previously ventured into short-form video with its own platform, Inspire, which was launched within its mobile app. However, reports surfaced last month that Inspire had been shut down—suggesting Amazon’s appetite for social media may still be strong, but its previous experiment was not as successful as hoped.

Despite Amazon’s interest, sources familiar with the talks suggest that others in the conversation aren’t taking the bid too seriously. The New York Times noted that the e-commerce giant’s offer is viewed with skepticism by some parties involved in the ongoing negotiations.

A Competitive Field

Amazon is just the latest player to join a growing list of prospective buyers. President Trump previously stated that his administration had been in discussions with four groups regarding the sale of TikTok, though he did not name them. Other interested parties include venture capital firms like Blackstone and Andreessen Horowitz, as well as tech giant Oracle, which is reportedly leading a bid in partnership with other American investors. These proposals aim to buy out TikTok’s Chinese investors and carve out the platform from ByteDance, effectively neutralizing the concerns over foreign influence.

A White House-led initiative also suggests a potential spin-off of TikTok’s U.S. operations, with Chinese ownership reduced to below 20%, as required by U.S. law. But as the deadline draws near, it’s clear that every player is scrambling to come up with the most viable solution.

The Clock is Ticking

With such a high-stakes deadline looming, the future of TikTok—and its nearly 150 million U.S. users—hangs in the balance. Amazon’s last-minute bid has added a new layer of intrigue to this fast-paced drama, but whether or not the company can secure the platform before the ban deadline remains uncertain.

One thing is for sure: this will be a story to watch closely. And, as the world of tech and social media continues to evolve, we can only wonder who will come out on top in this race for TikTok’s future.

Stay tuned.
